Antonius "Tony' Rietveld, 91, of Cary, passed away July 18, 2016, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois.Tony was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to Wilhemus and Cornelia Rietveld on June 6th, 1925. After graduating high school, he worked with his uncles providing for the family during the German occupation. He volunteered to join the Dutch navy in 1945 and specialized in electronics and navigation. After his military service he reconnected with a family friend, Anna "Ans" Roffelsen. They married in July of 1953.Tony taught electronics after his military service, and it was during this time that he developed and nurtured his love for animal husbandry. After raising mink in The Netherlands and Ireland, Tony and Ans moved their family of four boys to the United States in 1967. Finally settling in Cary in 1970. While at Northwood Fur Farms, Tony became a leading expert on the raising of mink.He enjoyed going to work and was always satisfying his hunger for knowledge, by reading and doing research. He enjoyed going out to dinner, and spending time with his family. Tony shared his wife's love to travel. After Tony retired, they would often spend winters in Spain, entertaining friends and family. Tony is preceded in death by his wife Ans, parents; Wilhemus and Cornelia; his sister Hendrika, and two sons, Michael and Marcus. Tony is survived by his three sisters, Margaret Rietveld, Adriana Bosch and Laura (Joseph) Litvin; two sons, Willem (Diane) Rietveld and Jeroen (Adele Hendrix) Rietveld; seven grandchildren Russell (Beckie Grinnell) Rietveld, Adam (Rachael) Rietveld, Douglas (Christine) Rietveld, Edward Rietveld, Marcus Rietveld, Katrina Rietveld, Irena Rietveld; four great-grandchildren, Gavin Grinnell, Joseph Rietveld, Ryan Rietveld, Margaret Rietveld and many family and friends.Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Kahle-Moore Funeral Home, 403 Silver Lake Rd., Cary.
