Thomas “Thom” R. Hastings, age 73, of Cary, IL, passed away peacefully at home on July 29, 2025. He was born May 17, 1952 in Highwood, IL to his loving parents, Gloria (née Doull) and Robert “Bob” Hastings Jr.
A proud 1970 graduate of Cary-Grove High School, it was there that he met the love of his life, Joyce Wrath. The two shared 52 devoted years of marriage.
Thom loved his life on the Fox River in Cary, where he and Joyce raised their two children, Jill and Clint, in the home they still shared. In later years, becoming a grandfather brought him tremendous joy, and he never missed an opportunity to show off stories, photos, and videos of his grandchildren to his “garage buddies” and his sisters. He also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Gracie, who rarely left his side.
He loved his music…..LOUD! Thom also held unwavering loyalty to his beloved Cubs and Bears, cheering for them year after year with hope and humor.
Thom carried a lifelong passion for being outdoors. In his younger years, he loved snow skiing and playing sports, embracing the energy and camaraderie they brought. As the years went on, that same spirit drew him to fishing, the beach, and especially boating. Even when vacations took him inland, he would find lakes or rivers in the area to experience. Thom loved visiting boat museums, marinas, and boat shows any chance he could. With friends, he refurbished a number of wooden boats of which he was very proud.
Professionally, Thom built a career in the real estate industry, beginning as a land surveyor, then a real estate appraiser and lastly an insurance inspector. Though the ever-changing real estate market required him to adapt, each new chapter brought him fresh challenges and lasting satisfaction.
Thom is preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert and Gloria Hastings; his brothers, Robert “Bob” and David Hastings; and his brother-in-law, Bill Sutterlin. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hastings; daughter, Jill (Joe) Wejman; son, Clint Hastings; grandchildren, AJ Wejman, and Ruby, Juno, and Stella Hastings; and sisters, Gail Sutterlin, Elizabeth Junion, and Sarah (Mark) Sawyer.
Thom’s life was marked by love and joy in simple pleasures. He leaves behind a legacy of family devotion, loyal friendships, and countless memories that will be forever cherished.
