Thomas Edward Clemens, known affectionately to friends and family as Tom, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children and grandchildren on June 28, 2024, at the age of 87 in McHenry, IL. Born on July 25, 1936, in Sugar Creek, MO, Tom was a man whose life was characterized by dedication, compassion, and a warm sense of humor that touched everyone he met.
Tom grew up in the heart of Missouri, where he was deeply loved by his parents, Marion and John Clemens, both of whom predeceased him. He shared his childhood with his brothers, Philip and the late Daniel Clemens.
His beloved wife of 40 years, Marion Clemens lovingly shared all aspects of his life including the happiest and saddest of times, milestones, and achievements. Tom was a kind, loving and patient father but this journey was marked by joy and sorrow, with the loss of his son, Thomas Clemens, Jr. His love for his daughters, Tamara Clemens and Teresa Carey, as well as his stepchildren, Judy Olesen, Vicki Olesen, Len Slone, and Darren Slone was steadfast and profound.
He was a cherished grandfather to a wonderful host of grandchildren and great- grandchildren including, Stephanie, Jason, Joe, Marnie, Thomas III, Timothy, John, Daniel, Kelsey, Bert, George, Ethan, Darel, Aaron, Chad, Lindsay, Jesse, Ember, Aidan, Len, Leah, Laura, Lomasi, and Brandon.
Tom played football and studied engineering at the University of Missouri before serving in the Marine Corp and later studied at the University of Tennessee, equipping him with the knowledge and skills that would define his professional life. He served with distinction as the Superintendent of Maintenance at Admiral Gas Company, where his leadership and expertise were invaluable.
His service to his country as a veteran of the Marine Corps was a source of great pride for Tom and instilled in him a sense of discipline and honor that he carried throughout his life. His faith was also central to who he was; as a deacon in his church, he acted as a pillar of support and guidance for his community.
Tom's interests were as varied as they were fulfilling. He had a passion for tinkering, a pastime that allowed him to channel his creativity and critical thinking skills. His love for gardening brought beauty to his surroundings and joy to those who experienced his green thumb. A voracious reader, Tom was always eager to explore new worlds and ideas through the pages of a book.
Camping and traveling were among Tom's favorite ways to spend time, often accompanied by family who shared in his adventures.
An active member of his church, Tom's involvement went beyond his role as a deacon. He was a steadfast participant in church activities, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. His faith was a testament to his character, and his actions were a reflection of the love he had for his community.
