Susan Ling Obituary

Susan Ann Ling, of Crystal Lake, IL, a compassionate soul born on July 16, 1955 in Chicago, IL, passed away on September 4, 2026 at the age of 71.

Susan, known for her loving and supportive nature, was a beacon of light in many lives. Her life’s journey, filled with remarkable dedication and inspiring achievements, was a testament to her indomitable spirit. Susan’s life was an embodiment of her belief that caring for others is the truest form of love.

Susan's commitment to mental health advocacy was unparalleled. She dedicated her professional career to the State of Illinois, serving in Mental Health Services till her retirement in 2018. Her perseverance and passion did not stop at retirement. She was a member of the NAMI state board and a local affiliate, advocating for organizations dealing with mental illness. She created her own organization, Beacon of Hope, that she wished to become a resource in the mental health community. The impact of her work extended beyond her immediate role, touching countless lives and leaving an indelible mark in the field of mental health. Her colleagues remember her as an inspiring figure, and her family admired her for the strength and resilience she embodied.

While her professional life was filled with accolades and achievements, what mattered most to Susan was her family and friends. Married to her loving husband, David Ling, on December 24, 1983, Susan was the proud and nurturing mother of Elizabeth, David (Neda), Marianne, Maribeth, Catherine, and Margaret. She was also a cherished sister to Ken, Cathy (George), and Wayne (Cindy). Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Betty (née Bublitz) Destree. She was a pillar of strength for her family, her love and support serving as their guiding force.

Susan’s compassionate spirit, steadfast dedication, and genuine love for others will be greatly missed, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. We encourage everyone to leave their favorite memories of Susan and upload photos to the memorial page. Let's celebrate her life and remember the beautiful moments we shared with her.

Interment will be private.
