John Waldemar Nielsen, age 80, of Cary, IL. He was born September 11, 1945in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to his loving parents, Norman and Dorothy (née Wright) Nielsen.

A proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, John earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and later his Master’s degree in Counseling. He carried these achievements into a meaningful career, serving others with empathy and professionalism at Northwestern Medicine in Woodstock. His work reflected his deep commitment to understanding people and helping them navigate life’s challenges.

John’s personal life was forever changed with his marriage to Liz and enriched by the birth of their son Eric. John and Liz met through a mutual friend during their college years. Their connection was immediate. On their very first date, John taught Liz how to drive a motorcycle—a moment that became a treasured part of their story, and a skill she kept for more than fifty years.

Blessed with a great smile and a charming personality, John possessed both the clever wit of his Norwegian heritage and, as many observed, the Irish gift of gab. These qualities made him a captivating conversationalist and a natural teacher. He shared knowledge freely, encouraged others, and inspired those around him with patience and humor.

A voracious reader, John moved easily between fiction and non-fiction, always eager to learn and explore new ideas. He was also a dedicated fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs, faithfully supporting his teams season after season. His commitment to fitness was another defining part of his life—he was a devoted runner who enjoyed working out and maintaining his strength and health.

John will be remembered for his kindness, his insight, and the vibrant personality that drew people naturally to him. His legacy endures in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the deep love he shared with those closest to him.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Eric Nielsen; and brother, William Nielsen.

Visitation will be 6:00pm to 8:00pm, with funeral service at 7:45pm, Friday, December 5, 2025, at Kahle-Moore Funeral Home, 403 Silver Lake Road, Cary, IL 60013.

Interment will be private.
