We gather today to celebrate the life of JoAnne Serowka, a woman whose generosity and courage touched the lives of many. Born on March 3, 1955, at Resurrection Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, JoAnne's journey came to a peaceful close on July 27, 2024, at Journey Care Barrington, after a valiant fight against various medical issues.
JoAnne's life was marked by her unwavering spirit and loving nature. In 1983, she graduated from Harper College's Nursing School, embarking on a career that would define much of her life's work. For 17 years, JoAnne served as a Registered Nurse, a role that allowed her to extend her innate compassion and care to those in need. She was not only a dedicated healthcare provider but also an active participant in her professional community, where she formed lasting bonds and left an indelible impact.
Beyond her professional pursuits, JoAnne was a beacon of love and support to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Evelyn Stevenson, and her siblings, Eric Stevenson and Gail Stevenson (Kane). Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her brother Douglas Stevenson, her loving husband James Serowka, her children Matthew Dunn, Ryan Serowka, and James Serowka II, her grandchildren Gavin Dunn and Jayden Dunn, as well as her many nephews and nieces, including Jason Schrat, Craig Brown, Scott Brown, Charles Kane, Derek Kane, Christopher Kane, Patrick Serowka, Crystal Fishback (Serowka), DeAnna Kane, Karen Serowka, and Christine Serowka.
JoAnne's passions extended to the tranquility of her garden, the joy of her pool, and the companionship of her beloved dogs. Her interests were a reflection of her personality—nurturing, joyful, and full of life. Those who knew her will remember the sanctuary she created in her backyard, a place where nature thrived under her care and where laughter often echoed during family gatherings.
The words "generous," "loving," and "courageous" encapsulate JoAnne's essence. She gave selflessly, loved deeply, and faced life's challenges with a bravery that inspired those around her. As Helen Keller once said, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." JoAnne embodied this sentiment, and it is her resilient character that will continue to inspire her family and friends. JoAnne Serowka's legacy is one of warmth, resilience, and boundless love. Her life was a testament to the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Today, as we reflect on her life, we are reminded to cherish the moments, to nurture the bonds of family and friendship, and to face each day with the same courage and love that JoAnne exemplified throughout her life. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit will forever remain a guiding light for those she has left behind.
