Edward T. McGovern

Edward T. McGovern, age 87, of Fox Lake, IL, passed away on August 11, 2026. He was born on September 6, 1938 in Chicago, IL to his loving parents, William F. and Anna (née Springer) McGovern. He was the beloved husband of the late Kathy; loving father of Heather and Jodie; dearest brother of Patricia (the late Rick) Biszewski, the late Dorothy (Jim) MacKay, the late Mary (the late George) Page, and the late Buddy McGovern; dear brother-in-law of Linda (the late Chuck) Bernat; fond Uncle Terry to numerous nieces and nephews; true friend to many; and devoted pet parent to his late faithful cat, Riley.

Known as Terry in his younger years, Ed grew up in Chicago across from the Ogden Theatre, where movie tickets cost just 25 cents. That early exposure sparked a lifelong love of film, and he knew many movies by heart. He enjoyed a variety of genres, but for those watching a movie with him, comedies were best because of his infectious laugh.

Ed worked for the United States Postal Service for 38 years, retiring as a Building Equipment Mechanic. In later years, he often reminisced about earlier jobs, including cookie salesman for Sunshine Biscuit Company, meat cutter for High-Low Foods, and maintenance worker at Curie High School in Chicago. Most fondly, he remembered his time at ITT Kellogg, where he met his wife, Kathy.

Soon after Ed and Kathy met at work, Ed was drafted into the Army. They stayed in touch through letters and dates during his leaves and married a couple of years after his discharge.

In the 1940s, the McGovern family began vacationing at Lake Lawn Lodge in Delavan, Wisconsin, starting a tradition that Kathy joined when she married Ed. Their family of four returned year after year to gather with extended family. As their daughters grew, they traveled farther afield to locations that included Alaska, Canada, Scotland, and Ireland. Yet despite those adventures, Lake Lawn remains a cherished home away from home.

Ed—and, depending on the activity, Kathy—gave his daughters many memories of an active, adventurous childhood: piggyback rides to bed, games of catch, Frisbee, balloon tosses, sledding, bike rides along Lake Michigan, Cubs and White Sox games, and driving lessons that included a few mishaps, from Heather and Ed being escorted by police from the Ford City Mall parking lot during early-morning driving practice to Jodie and Ed getting locked in a cemetery. They also explored the now-vanished wooded isthmus at Lake Lawn.

Ed began jogging in his 30s and completed three Chicago Marathons in his 50s. He kept up a daily run for as long as he was able, later shifting to daily walks that made him a familiar presence in his adopted hometown of Cary, IL.

Ed was an avid Chicago sports fan. The Bears were his favorite team, and Gale Sayers and Walter Payton were his favorite players. Unusually, he rooted for both the Cubs and White Sox, though it is suspected that the White Sox may have had a slight edge because of his childhood loyalties and regard for Nellie Fox. He also enjoyed college and local football and often walked to Cary-Grove High School to watch Trojan games.

Ed had a head for math and a well-known love of cookies. He enjoyed history books and documentaries, followed the news, had an ear for music—especially Frank Sinatra—and added cycling to his exercise routine. He liked puttering in the garage, sitting outside and waving to passersby. He also valued lifelong learning and encouraged his daughters to pursue education, whether through college or a trade, so they would be prepared for the future.

Dad will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing he and Mom are together again.

A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30am until funeral service at 11:00am, Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Cary United Methodist Church, 500 N. First Street, Cary, IL 60013. Rev. Dr. Charles Insun Yoon will be officiating.

Interment will be private.
