Delbert J. Burns Jr., affectionately known as Del by his loved ones and friends, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024, at the age of 94 at Three Oaks Memory Care in Cary, Illinois. Born on February 3, 1930 in Chicago, Del's life was a testament to his friendly, spirited, and adventurous nature.
Del's early years in Chicago were the foundation of a life filled with dedication and service. His commitment to his country was evident when he served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. Upon returning home, Del continued to serve his community as a proud member of the Chicago Police Department in 1957. His work ethic and sense of duty were an inspiration to all who knew him.
After retiring in 1991 from the Chicago PD force, Del found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer who relished the opportunity to play with his buddies. Music, campfires, and camping were among his favorite activities, and he could often be found socializing and sharing stories around a warm fire. Del's love for sunsets was fulfilled in his later years with serene views in Florida, and he cherished the memorable get-togethers in Willow Run, Wisconsin.
Del's spirit of adventure was matched by his warm and welcoming personality. He never met a stranger and could instantly turn acquaintances into friends. His presence was a source of comfort and joy to those around him, and his laughter was contagious.
Family was the cornerstone of Del's life. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Raynelda, also known as Rae, and a loving father to his children. He is survived by his sons, Lawrence (Larry) Burns and Delbert J. Burns III (DJ), and his wife, Wendy; his daughters, Sharon Burns and Teresa Burns-Jutzi (Terrie), and her husband, John Jutzi; his sister, Rosemarie, and her husband, Dennis V. Baron. He was preceded in death by his son, William (Bill) Burns. Del's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Casey Burns, Jennifer Klein, Billy Klein, and his adored great-grandchildren, EJ Burns, Austin Burns, Evelin Klein, and Macie Miller.
As we bid farewell to Delbert J. Burns Jr., we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, marked by love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit. He will be remembered as a man who embraced life's adventures, cherished his family, and left a lasting imprint on the hearts of those he touched. Del's journey may have come to an end, but his memory will continue to inspire us all.

May we all aspire to live as fully and kindly as he did, leaving behind a legacy of love and spirited memories for generations to come. Delbert J. Burns Jr.'s story may have concluded, but his spirit lives on in the many lives he enriched. And as he always said to you when leaving “ be careful out there and drive safe”!
