Charles Louis Meter, of Crystal Lake, IL, affectionately known as Chuck, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, at the age of 72. He was born August 12, 1952 in Evanston, IL to his loving parents, Vincent and Clemence (née Bisson) Meter.
A devoted husband, father, friend, and mentor, Chuck’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to his family, his work, and his community. His presence brought laughter, wisdom, and generosity to all who knew him.
Chuck spent 28 years as a proud and respected member of Operating Engineers Union 399. He brought his talents and tireless work ethic to Evanston Hospital and later to Kemper Insurance in Long Grove. Known for his expertise and reliability, Chuck was the colleague you could always count on—whether to fix a problem or to brighten the day with a shared laugh.
A man of deep Episcopal faith, Chuck was actively engaged in his church, always ready to serve where needed. His compassion also led him to the local food pantry, where he gave his time generously, helping ensure that those in need received nourishment and kindness in equal measure.
Chuck was especially passionate about guiding the next generation, serving as a Boy Scout leader and role model. He instilled values of leadership, respect for nature, and the importance of community service—lessons that continue to shape the lives of those he mentored.
In his quieter moments, Chuck found joy in stained glass artistry, crafting intricate pieces that reflected his patient and meticulous nature. He was also a true craftsman and handyman—if something was broken, Chuck could fix it. His talent in the industrial arts was unmatched, and his creative spirit knew no bounds.
What truly set Chuck apart, however, was his quick wit, unshakable humor, and thoughtful wisdom. With a clever joke or a warm smile, he had the rare gift of making others feel at ease. He offered sage wisdom and guidance without judgment, and laughter without effort.
As we bid farewell to Chuck, we honor a life lived with purpose, compassion, and integrity. He was the epitome of funny, handy, and wise, and his memory will continue to shine through the countless lives he touched. His departure leaves a void, but his spirit remains a beacon of light, and his legacy will endure in the laughter, love, and stories he leaves behind.
Chuck is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Karen Meter, his devoted son, Chris Meter, and his cherished daughter-in-law, Mandy Meter. Together, they navigated the journey of life, enriched by Chuck’s unwavering love and support. May he now rest in peace, knowing that his journey was one of significance, and that he was deeply, profoundly loved.
