Barton W. Engels, age 72, of Algonquin, IL, passed away on October 3, 2025. He was born February 2, 1953 in Chicago, IL to his loving parents, Robert and Lavonne (née Whitcomb) Engels.

Barton was a gifted advertising representative whose wit, creativity, and intelligence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Known for his sharp mind and playful sense of humor, Barton approached both work and life with curiosity and enthusiasm. His love of culture, travel, and conversation made him the kind of person who could find common ground with anyone and make them laugh along the way.

A lifelong music lover, talented guitarist, and former member of Poor Richard, Barton’s passion for performing led to one of his most memorable moments—opening for Cheap Trick, a story he recounted with joy and just the right touch of pride.

Sundays in the fall were sacred to Barton, who rarely missed a Chicago Bears game. He watched faithfully each week with his closest friends, turning every game into a gathering of laughter, debate, and camaraderie.

At home, Barton shared his life with Ariel, his beloved Amazon parrot of 38 years, whose chatter and companionship were constant sources of comfort and delight. Above all, Barton was a devoted father, whose love and guidance shaped the life of his daughter in profound and lasting ways.

Barton’s creativity, humor, and boundless curiosity will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Barton was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Tristin Engels; sisters, Cynthia Engels and Robin Engels; and nieces, Alexa Weatherley, Kenna Engels, and Payton Engels.

A private memorial is being planned by the immediate family.  Interment will also be private.
